The Pieces In Between

I’ve been expanding my website over the last little while. The work has always existed, but like any creative practice, it continues to evolve. So does the language I use to describe it.

Writing my artist statement encouraged me to slow down and name the through line in how I see.

I’ve never thought of my paintings and my writing as separate. They’ve always belonged to the same practice. Sometimes an experience asks to become an image. Other times it asks to become words. Both begin in the same place, with how life feels.

The website has become more than a portfolio. It’s become a place where the different pieces of my practice meet. A place that reflects how I make sense of the world, and how that understanding continues to expand through experience.

I’ve realized I’m drawn to the pieces in between.

The contradictions.

The imperfections.

The moments that refuse to fit neatly into one category or another.

Those are the places that hold my attention because they feel the most honest. Life is rarely one thing. Beauty can exist beside grief. Strength can exist beside vulnerability. Certainty often gives way to curiosity. I think that’s where we recognize ourselves, and each other.

Whether I’m painting or writing, I’m trying to create a language for what is often felt but rarely spoken. Sometimes that language is visual. Sometimes it’s written. Together, they tell the same story from different perspectives. They build on one another, adding layers in much the same way I build a painting. One mark changes the next. One idea makes room for another.

As I continue to shape this space, my intention isn’t simply to share finished work. It’s to give a little more perspective into how I combine these mediums, how experiences become stories, and how each piece informs the next. Not to explain the work, but to invite you into the way it comes together.

I’m still exploring these questions.
